Welcome to the Garden

a community of people tending life together in the good soil of downtown Seattle.

We are a radically inclusive assembly of people who gather to share.

Some of the things we share include: service, wisdom, questions, experience, ritual, voices, food, stories, creativity, prayer, life, learning, movement, dance, peace, restlessness, relationship, and song.

We are a growing community of faith in downtown Seattle. We are rooted in sacred ritual and service with our neighbors near and far; watered by the questions that bring us to common laughter, wonder, and tears; warmed by the relationships that support and challenge us in community; and renewed by rhythms of doing and being, resting and acting, playing and working, as we respond to God's great love for all the earth.

The Garden is a Reconciling in Christ community, meaning we welcome and affirm people of all sexual orientations and gender identities and expressions. We are a part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and we enjoy a strong partnership with the people of Gethsemane Lutheran Church.

  • We are relational people
  • We want to know each other what were each passionate about; what scares us; what we celebrate; where weve been and where we are in life.
  • We hear, tell, and value powerful stories
  • Stories challenge us and bring us together; they convey information, shape our values, entertain us, stir our emotions, and drive us to action.
  • We care for the earth
  • We love the natural world, both for its own sake and because we experience the Divine there. We trust the scientific community when they tell us that global climate change is happening, and that the primary cause is human activity.
  • We respect world religious traditions
  • We gather around Christian story, song, and practice. Many of us are also fed spiritually and religiously by other world wisdom traditions, and we welcome such perspectives and practices into our midst as blessings for the human journey.
  • We engage as a public church
  • The spiritual life is not an escape from the harsher aspects of community life. Rather, it offers practices to strengthen our transformational engagement with structural evil such as racism, classism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and ableism.
